Ion chromatograph with three-dimensional printed absorbance detector for indirect ultraviolet absorbance detection of phosphate in effluent and natural waters

An ion chromatography system employing a low-cost three-dimensional printed absorbance detector for indirect ultraviolet detection towards portable phosphate analysis of environmental and industrial waters has been developed. The optical detection cell was fabricated using stereolithography three-dimensional printing of nanocomposite material. Chromatographic analysis and detection of phosphate were carried out using a CS5A 4 × 250 mm analytical column with indirect ultraviolet detection using a 255 nm light-emitting diode. Isocratic elution using a 0.6 mM potassium phthalate eluent combined with 1.44 mM sodium bicarbonate was employed at a flow rate of 0.75 mL/min. A linear calibration range of 0.5 to 30 mg/L PO₄³⁻ applicable to environmental and wastewater analysis was achieved. For retention time and peak area repeatability, relative standard deviation values were 0.68 and 4.09%, respectively. Environmental and wastewater samples were analyzed with the optimized ion chromatography platform and the results were compared to values obtained by an accredited ion chromatograph. For the analysis of environmental samples, relative errors of <14 % were achieved. Recovery analysis was also carried out on both freshwater and wastewater samples and recovery results were within the acceptable range for water analysis using standard ion chromatography methods.     

Non-Pincer-Type Manganese Complexes as Efficient Catalysts for the Hydrogenation of Esters

Catalytic hydrogenation of carboxylic acid esters is essential for the green production of pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and fine chemicals. Herein, we report the efficient hydrogenation of esters with manganese catalysts based on simple bidentate aminophosphine ligands. Monoligated Mn PN complexes are particularly active for the conversion of esters into the corresponding alcohols at Mn concentrations as low as 0.2 mol % in the presence of sub-stoichiometric amounts of KO^tBu base.

Convergence analysis for Lasserre’s measure-based hierarchy of upper bounds for polynomial optimization

We consider the problem of minimizing a continuous function f over a compact set \({\mathbf {K}}\). We analyze a hierarchy of upper bounds proposed by Lasserre (SIAM J Optim 21(3):864–885, 2011), obtained by searching for an optimal probability density function h on \({\mathbf {K}}\) which is a sum of squares of polynomials, so that the expectation \(\int _{{\mathbf {K}}} f(x)h(x)dx\) is minimized. We show that the rate of convergence is no worse than \(O(1/\sqrt{r})\), where 2r is the degree bound on the density function. This analysis applies to the case when f is Lipschitz continuous and \({\mathbf {K}}\) is a full-dimensional compact set satisfying some boundary condition (which is satisfied, e.g., for convex bodies). The rth upper bound in the hierarchy may be computed using semidefinite programming if f is a polynomial of degree d, and if all moments of order up to \(2r+d\) of the Lebesgue measure on \({\mathbf {K}}\) are known, which holds, for example, if \({\mathbf {K}}\) is a simplex, hypercube, or a Euclidean ball.     

A remark on the Gaussian lower bound for the Neumann heat kernel of the Laplace–Beltrami operator

We adapt in the present note the perturbation method introduced in Choulli and Kayser (Positivity 19(3):625–646, 2015) to get a lower Gaussian bound for the Neumann heat kernel of the Laplace–Beltrami operator on an open subset of a compact Riemannian manifold.     

Some asymptotic limits of reaction–diffusion systems appearing in reversible chemistry

This paper concerns reaction–diffusion systems consisting of three or four equations, which come out of reversible chemistry. We introduce different scalings for those systems, which make sense in various situations (species with very different concentrations or very different diffusion rates, chemical reactions with very different rates, etc.). We show how recently introduced mathematical tools allow to prove that the formal asymptotics associated to those scalings indeed hold at the rigorous level.     

Dendrimers Functionalized with Palladium Complexes of N-, N,N-, and N,N,N-Ligands

Pyridine, pyridine imine, and bipyridine imine ligands functionalized by a phenol have been synthesized and characterized, in many cases by X-ray diffraction. Several of these N-, N,N-, and N,N,N,-ligands have been grafted onto the surface of phosphorhydrazone dendrimers, from generation 1 to generation 3. The complexation ability of these monomers and dendrimers towards palladium(II) has been assayed. The corresponding complexes have been either isolated or prepared in situ. In both cases, the monomeric and dendritic complexes have been tested as catalysts in Heck couplings and in Sonogashira couplings. In some cases, a positive dendritic effect has been observed, that is, an increase of the catalytic efficiency proportional to the dendrimer generation.

A numerical study on the dynamic response of a mechanical system composed of two coaxial cylinders in relative rotation and unilateral contact with Coulomb friction is presented. This discussion complements the semi-analytical results on stick–slip waves given in Moirot, Nguyen, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. IIb 328 (2000) 663–669, by some numerical simulations on the dynamic transition of the system from a given initial state to a surface wave. The case of stick–slip–separation waves is considered.
